Can you imagine being a health-conscious doctor who eats a whole foods diet, exercises regularly, has normal labs (blood sugar, cholesterol and CAC score all good) and has a widowmaker heart attack at age 34?? That's what happened to my guest on the podcast this week. Dr. Stephen Hussey had a widow maker heart attack out of the blue. Yes, he was managing Type 1 diabetes which put him at a higher risk, but he had been managing that well for a long time. It got him asking questions, especially after the advice and information he received in the hospital that did not reflect what the real research says. He was recommended eight medications in the hospital and told he'd be on five of them for the rest of his life. He takes none of them. In this week's episode we're challenging the conventional heart health narrative - from the role of statins to the fear around red meat and cholesterol - and take a deeper look at what actually supports a strong, resilient heart. I am often asked whether or not I think muscle testing is Christian. To have this discussion, I invited Jimmy Scaringi to be a guest on the podcast this week. I first heard Jimmy speak at the Cellcore conference a few years ago.The title of his presentation was Breakthroughs in Clinical Applications For Autistic Children and it was fantastic. But I was sold before he even started because he got up on stage and said, "I am a devoted Christian," and then he literally prayed to Jesus right there from the stage! It was amazing! 300: Parasites, Toxicity & Immune Dysfunction with Dr. Todd Watts
I'm moving into my sixth year of taking people through the Cellcore Foundational Detox Protocol. I've learned a lot as a practitioner from this experience. Things like: Parasites don't just live in the gut, they can live in your sinus cavity, joints, brain, gallblader…just about anywhere in the body. Yeah, that chronic sinus infection could be due to a parasite. Gut protocols address the gut, but not your whole body. This is why I switched gears and started recommending Cellcore as a go-to foundational step. Toxins create deficiency. They steal electrons and important nutrients from your body. The supplemental vitamins and minerals will never be enough if you don't address the toxic overload. Toxins feed parasites. If you're not addressing the toxins, you're spinning your wheels. Drainage before detox. Drainage before detox. Drainage before detox. People who go into detoxes without opening drainage pathways (so the toxins can get out) and addressing mitochondria are setting themselves up for a hard (and less effective) experience. Binders are a must but conventional binders (like charcoal) only work in the gut and not systemically. Plus, long-term use puts you at risk for nutrient deficiency. Cellcore binders work systemically and can be used more long-term. Sometimes you have to dose up to get over a detox hump. This has been a counterintuitive learning curve for me as a practitioner but I've seen it work. 275: Darkness and Night Time Hormones
Each night, the onset of darkness ushers in a cascade of hormones that help us detoxify, repair, manage metabolism, boost immunity and rejuvenate our entire system. They include hormones like melatonin, growth hormone, leptin, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and prolactin. These hormones are time-sensitive and require true darkness to fully operate. Growth hormone, for example, is supposed to have a big surge around midnight when you are already in slow-wave sleep (which means you'd have needed to go to sleep around 10). Growth hormone plays a role in our metabolic health and if you regularly miss that surge opportunity, it can compromise the way you utilize protein, fats and carbs. God turned the lights off for a reason and we need to too so that we can get to sleep and experience the full benefits of the way He designed our bodies to be well. Fellow podcaster Vanessa Spina has experimented a lot with her diet and macronutrient ratios over the years. She started out as a vegetarian but felt lethargic and, at 38% body fat, knew it wasn't working for her. From there she incorporated intermittent fasting, then implemented a ketogenic diet (and became well known as @ketogenicgirl), then found a sweet spot with a high-protein ketogenic diet. Somewhat recently, she experimented with a higher carb approach based on the recommendations of some of the experts she has interviewed, but found that higher fat works better for her as an energy source than higher carb. In this week's episode, Vanessa shares the strategy and reasoning behind her experimentation and reminds us that it is ok and encouraged to experiment with your diet to find what works best for you, despite what the research or experts say. 272: Freshly Milled Wheat and Autoimmunity with Michal Grappe
One of the questions I get often is: what do you think about eating freshly milled wheat flour if you have an autoimmune condition? Most functional health practitioners recommend removing gluten as part of an autoimmune dietary plan (that's what I've always advised as well). But unless someone has Celiac, is it necessary? I've been conflicted on how to advise people who have an autoimmune condition because is freshly milled flour the thing that's going to make it worse or make it better? In Michal Grappe's case, it made it better. In fact, it was the thing that completely erased lupus from her bloodwork. She used a long-term restrictive diet to successfully manage her Guillain-Barré syndrome, but it wasn't helping to prevent or manage lupus. When she saw a video explaining the benefits of milling wheat, she didn't feel like she had anything to lose by giving it a try. Nine months later, the lupus was no longer showing on her bloodwork, her husband's arthritis had improved, her son's warts went away and her daughter no longer had a scalp condition. Redox Potential is the measure of how easily you gain or lose electrons. The better you gain and hold onto electrons, the better your body can naturally rid itself of toxic and pathogenic material. 238: Reconsidering Fasting and Meal Timing
In this week's episode we're diving into some of the science and nuance around fasting and how to make considerations based on your stage and season of life. Here are key points we cover: Eat with the sun and The Son. Eat within the daylight hours and eat with gratitude and glory to the Lord our Savior. Try to get morning sunlight in your eyes before you eat. Eat by 10am to help support muscle protein synthesis. This becomes more important as we age in order to help counteract age-related muscle loss. Eat within the first hour of waking to help restore leptin sensitivity. Variables like coffee and exercise while fasting depend a lot on your stress levels. Ultimately your choices are between you, your body and the Creator of your body. It's always important to consider how we are serving the Lord in the stewardship of our bodies, how we are or aren't honoring the needs OF our bodies, and how we need to be open to how those needs may change in the different seasons and stages of our lives. 197: The Benefits of a Full Body Ultrasound with Todd Turner, RVT
I recently had an extensive body ultrasound after some "hot spots" came back on my thermography scan. It picked up some inflammation in my neck area and I wasn't sure if it was my carotid artery, thyroid or something else. I had only planned on having the ultrasound scan on my neck but took the advice to have a more extensive look. I'm SO glad I did! He looked at my heart, breasts, kidneys, adrenals, pancreas, spleen, intestines and so much more.Turns out my carotid artery is fine, my thyroid is ok, but there are a few other things he found that I wouldn't know about had I not done the full body scan. It was a very interesting and eye opening experience and part of what made it so great was my brilliant technician and all of the little tidbits he shared during the 1.5 hour appointment. Seasonal transitions are a perfect time for a detox. The winter to spring transition, in particular, naturally encourages fasting, burning fat and releasing toxins. Winter is a higher fat and protein focused (more animal based) season of the year because there's less plant life available when it's freezing outside. It's also a more natural time to fast longer because the daytime is shorter. That will change on the other side of spring when the plants are growing and it's naturally a time for more carbohydrates and less fasting because there is more light. This all coincides beautifully with the season of Lent. Each day our body attempts to maintain a negative charge by gaining electrons and excreting excess protons. We do this through secretions like sweat, urine, poop and tears - which are all positively charged. I'm much more feasty in the summertime. I eat more carbs; I don't fast as long; I drink more wine. Poor health comes from disorder in the body. When there is disorder, there is disease. It is being out of alignment with the way God made us. Everything we need for good health is revealed to us in Genesis in the Creation story when God established order from chaos. 141: It All Comes Down to Your Mitochondria
All of the parts of your body need energy to do their work. Whether it's your brain, your heart, your adrenals, your gut, your liver, your eyes, your skin, your kidneys or any other part of your body - the cells must generate enough power so they can function. That's the job of the mitochondria. Some parts of the body, like the brain and the eyes, have more mitochondria per cell because they are more metabolically demanding. In fact, age-related conditions like Alzheimer's and macular degeneration are related to poor mitochondrial function. The aging process in general is a decline of mitochondrial health. Many medical approaches overlook the fact that the organ can't work unless the mitochondria work. Instead of supporting mitochondrial function, drugs like statins, antibiotics, acid blockers and metformin are prescribed - which further degrade mitochondrial function. I learned a life coaching concept called the 50/50 which essentially reminds us that our human experience will be full of both positive and negative emotion. It's the way we show up in the "Hard 50" that determines so much about how we experience life and whether or not we achieve our goals. How do we handle ourselves when we're stressed, sad, anxious, bored, disappointed, scared, inconvenienced and uncomfortable?Do we eat our way through it? Drink our way through it? Trying to get your family to eat healthy is a delicate balance of not being too strict and not being too lenient. People who grew up in strict food households often tell me they would go crazy eating every forbidden food as soon as they got out of the house and are now sugar-holics. Others had no boundaries at all and now struggle to like healthy foods. I've tried to land somewhere in the middle. I don't forbid things like sugar or chips, but I do my best to upgrade by choosing better ingredients.But, still, I worry. It's not easy being a nutritionist's kid and I feel like they've been making some "openly rebelling" choices lately. 112: Reasons to Use an Animal-Based Therapeutic Diet
Animal-based diets may fly in the face of modern plant-centric nutrition, but we can't deny that it is often the therapeutic approach that sends people on their path to healing. When we look at therapeutic diet options like Paleo, Keto, Carnivore, The GAPS Diet, Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), FODMAPS, Low Oxalate Diet, Low Nightshade Diet, the Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP), the Low Salicylate Diet, the Candida Diet - what they all have in common is an elimination of plant foods. Plants can be healing, but they can also be harmful. For some people, the fiber, sugar or defense compounds in plant foods can be the trigger that wrecks the gut or inflames the immune system.
